Venrock (formerly Venrock Associates; ) is one of the oldest and most storied venture capital firms in the United States, formed in 1969 (name a portmanteau of ''Venture'' and ''Rockefeller'') as the formalised venture capital arm of the Rockefeller family aEUR" originally established by Laurance S. Rockefeller (1910-2004, fourth child of John D. Rockefeller Jr.) and his siblings to institutionalise the family's venture-investing activities that began in the late 1930s with investments in Eastern Airlines and other early-stage businesses. Founding partners included Laurance Rockefeller and Peter O. Crisp. The firm is headquartered at 3340 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, California, with additional offices at 7 Bryant Park in New York City and 34 Farnsworth Street in Boston, Massachusetts, and invests across information technology (enterprise software, cybersecurity, SaaS, fintech, AI / ML, defence & aerospace) and healthcare / life sciences (therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, digital health). Venrock manages approximately USD 3+ billion in cumulative AUM across ~15+ funds, with recent funds typically in the USD 400-500 million range (Fund VIII at USD 450 million in 2017). The firm operates a dedicated Venrock Healthcare Capital Partners sub-strategy. Historical portfolio includes legendary investments: Intel (1969 seed investor), Apple Computer, Gilead Sciences, Check Point Software, DoubleClick, Endeca, Illumina, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Centocor, Nest, CloudFlare, Dollar Shave Club, Athenahealth, 3Com, StrataCom, Juno Therapeutics, Dapper Labs, Astranis, and approximately 800 investments with 112+ IPOs across the firm's history. Partners have historically included Ray Rothrock, Bryan Roberts, Brian Ascher, Anders Hove, and Ethan Batraski.
