Established in 1987, the Iowa State University Research Park is a 230-acre development with over 270,000 square feet of building space and is located south of the Iowa State University campus. ISU Research Park is a technology community and an incubator of new and expanding businesses. It provides a material and human-resource rich environment for technology-based firms and research organizations. The Park also helps young Iowa-based companies develop their potential and nurtures scientific and technological entrepreneurial ventures. The Park's 60 tenant companies and university centers employ over 800 people. The ISU Research Park has constructed a multi-tenant building that houses an 8,000 square foot wet-lab incubator facility. The incubation facility provides critically needed laboratory space for the growth and development of start-up, spin-off, and established biotechnology companies. The Park's Technology Incubator, also known as Iowa State Innovation System (ISIS), identifies early-stage, tech-based concepts and businesses and aids in economic development and technology transfer. ISIS provides an environment for growth by helping develop viable business plans and secure financial backing. To date, ISIS has supported over 80 start-up companies.
