Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland and originally founded in 1998 as as Varma-Sampo Mutual Pension Insurance Company, provides insurance and pension services, vocational rehabilitation, insurance contribution estimates, and calculations. Following a strong 2009 in which the firm secured a number of new pension contracts from Finnish universities, Varma manages a total of €31 billion ($40 billion USD). Varma has a total of €3.5 billion in private equity investments (including about €1.5 billion in unfunded commitments) and about €4.2 billion in real estate investments (only about €200 million is invested indirectly in about 8-10 funds). Varma also has about $4 billion in hedge fund investments.
