Alan Hoops is an Executive Chairman at Health Essentials. He was a former Co-Founder, President and CEO of PacifiCare (NYSE: PHS), an $11 billion Medicare focused HMO based in California. Hoops co-founded PacifiCare in 1977. He assumed the role of President and CEO in April 1993 when he replaced his long-time mentor and co-founder Terry Hartshorn and became PacifiCare's Chairman of the Board in 1999. During Hoop's tenure as President and CEO from 1993-2000, PacifiCare grew five-fold from $2 billion to $11 billion with approximately 4 million members in 9 states and Guam. During Hoop's first five years as President and CEO PacifiCare's stock price doubled. Hoops founded PacifiCare's Secure Horizon's program, which under his leadership became the nation's largest Medicare HMO health plan, serving more than 1 million Medicare beneficiaries in nine states. Since 2000, Hoops has been Chairman of Benu, Inc., a regional benefits administration/marketing company. Hoops also serves as Board Director for Corvel, which provides medical cost-containment and managed care services to insurance companies, third-party administrators, and self-administered employees in the United States.
