The Breakthrough Energy Coalition is a large group of individuals and institutions committed to invest in the new energy technologies emerging out of government research institutions to provide reliable, affordable power with zero emissions. The coalition is investing in multiple ways - individually, through partnerships, directly in companies, or through pooled capital vehicles. The firm will invest in early stage companies that can produce energy with near zero carbon emissions and provide people with reliable energy. The firm is one of those investment vehicles that a majority of the BEC has created to invest science focused, patient, and flexible capital in new companies that show promise to fulfilling the BEC mission. The firm will provide seed, angel, and series A funding across five different sectors: electricity generation and storage, transportation, industrial use, agriculture and energy system efficiency.

- Anonymous reviewerI got into diligence with themBreakthrough seems to put a lot of stock in its brand and LP and very little effort into actually living up to either. They are fairly lazy in responding unless they believe you already have a term sheet. They are unresponsive and the q and a demonstrates a tendency to trends and fashion rather than real expertise within industry or knowledge of climate tech. If you want to keep Breakthrough interested you'll have to cater to these things and make sure you keep them on the hook. We spoke to several founders who got term sheets from BT and they had disappeared for a large part of the process - only to show back up at the end and start a bidding war with another fund who had done all the hard work.
