Back In 1996 Charles Archer wrote a proposal asking grants for starting a non-profit that would serve the needs of disabled people in New York. The same year he received the needed funds and the Evelyn Douglin Center for serving People in Need was born. At the beginning Evelyn Douglin Center was working with only one group, in an apartment in Brooklyn. In the following couple of years it managed to manage more than 30 groups on 5 locations in New York City.
Today Evelyn Douglin Center serves more than 1000 individuals at several locations in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. The company has more than 500 employees and many volunteers who are trained in helping the resident at the center. They provide them with educational assistance later on with employment assistance. All the employees at Evelyn Douglin Center are focusing on helping people. Those people usually come with developmental and intellectual disabilities. During their stay at the center they acquire tools and socialization skills which are much needed to make them live independently. EDCSPIN supports its activities through various governmental funding, proceeds from special events, several marketing projects that are related to center’s cause, and most importantly from voluntary contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.
