EMBL Ventures GmbH is a German venture capital firm based in Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, investing in biotechnology, medical technology, and life-sciences sector companies. The firm was originally established in 1997 as the technology-transfer / venture-capital arm affiliated with EMBL (the European Molecular Biology Laboratory), the intergovernmental European research organisation based in Heidelberg. EMBL Ventures subsequently spun out as an independent VC firm managing funds on behalf of institutional LPs but retaining close relationships with the EMBL scientific community and broader European life-sciences research ecosystem. The firm invests primarily at seed and Series A stages with typical initial check sizes in the EUR 500,000 to EUR 3 million range, targeting molecular-biology-driven biotech start-ups, medical-devices companies, and life-sciences-tools companies. EMBL Ventures has raised multiple institutional funds with aggregate AUM in the EUR low-hundreds-of-millions range. The firm operates alongside other German / DACH life-sciences VCs including HTGF, MIG Capital, Forbion Capital Partners, and Wellington Partners. Detailed current-fund vintage disclosures are partially documented.
