General (Ret) David H. Petraeus currently serves as the Chairman of the KKR Global Institute. After joining KKR in June 2013, he now oversees the company’s investment process and drives the Institute’s thought leadership platform on topics including environmental, social, and governance issues and geopolitical trends.
He graduated with distinction from the U.S. Military Academy and earned M.P.A. and Ph.D. degrees in international relations from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.
Before he joined KKR’s team, Gen. Petraeus spent 37 years with the United States military. That tenure includes serving as the head of the U.S. Central Command as well as overseeing American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following his military service, Gen. Petraeus also served as the Director of the CIA. He is a highly decorated general and has received a number of medals and awards from the United States Military, State Department, the United Nations, and NATO. He has been decorated by 13 different countries.
Now, in addition to his work with KKR, Gen. Petraeus also serves as an educator. He is a Visiting Professor Public Policy at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College; a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California; a non-resident Senior Fellow at Harvard University; and Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute. He is also a member of the advisory boards of numerous veteran’s organizations and for the Institute for the Study of War.
