Amon G. Carter and his wife, Nenetta Burton Carter, incorporated the Amon G. Carter Foundation in 1945. In 1947, upon the sale of the Wasson Field oil interests, the Foundation was funded with $8,511,712 coming 60% from Mr. Carter and 40% from Mrs. Carter. The foundation recieved a major portion of Mr Carter's estate after his death in 1945. His will expressed a desire to provide an opportunity to the public to enjoy his art collection. Accordingly, the Amon Carter Museum opened its doors in 1961. One-half of the foundation's annual grant budget is dedicated to Museum operations, capital improvements, and additions to the permanent collection. In the early 1970's, the foundation commissioned and funded the design and construction of the Fort Worth Water Gardens. The foundation has also supported many local projects.
