Gibney was an early investor in [PayPal](/organization/paypal) and became a multi-millionaire while still majoring at Stanford University in *science and technology studies* and *industrial engineering*.
After PayPal was acquired by eBay, Peter Thiel offered Gibney a job at his new hedge fund Clarium Capital. There Gibney advised Thiel in support of his early $500,000 investment in [Facebook](/organization/facebook).
Later he became a Founders Fund partner, championing the philosophy that startups should change the world, not just build a business. He wrote the [Founders Fund manifesto](http://www.foundersfund.com/the-future).
In December 2012, [according to TechCrunch](http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/11/founders-fund-bruce-gibney/), he left Founders Fund.
Gibney is the son of a Chinese mother who was a chemical engineer, and a father who worked in the furniture industry. He grew up on America's east coast.
